Publius Vergilius Maro, usually called Virgil or Vergil (70 BC – 19 BC) is the once famous Roman poet who acts as Dante's guide in Hell.

LifeEdit

Virgil was once a masterful Roman poet living under the rule of Caeser Augustus, living before the birth of Christ and becoming well-known by many along with other poets like Homer. Virgil is the author of the Aeneid, his magnum opus.

HellEdit

Virgil died shortly before the birth of Christ, and thus was never baptized. Because he lead a good life on earth, Virgil was given a place amongst the virtuous pagans in the Hall of Kings, within the circle of Limbo. Virgil found himself being called by a beautiful woman, asking him to help a friend she feared had gone astray. She tells him that appearing at the Gates of Hell, Virgil meets the Crusader Knight Dante, where he offers to guide him. From then on Virgil helps Dante to traverse the Nine Circles offering guidance and advising him of the purpose of each circle. Virgil also gives Dante his first spell when they first meet.

TriviaEdit

  • Virgil was a real Roman poet who represented to the real Dante Alighieri the pinnacle of human reason as well as the limitations of human reason.
  • In The Divine Comedy Virgil was sent by Beatrice to serve as Dante's guide through Hell and Purgatory ("Inferno" and "Purgatorio"). Being a pagan soul, however, Virgil was not allowed to enter Paradise, and passed Dante off to Beatrice at the end of "Purgatorio."
  • In Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic, Virgil has even more personality than in the game.
