Dark Forest was a piece of downloadable content for Dante's Inferno.

Overview[]

During his journey home to Beatrice, after fighting in the Crusades, Dante found himself lost within these dark woods. During the opening scene of the game, Dante was shown sitting by a campfire in the forest by sewing the red cross tapestry to his bare chest.

The player could download the Dark Forest level to play as an extension to the primary story of Dante's Inferno. In order to escape from the forest, Dante must carefully navigate through a maze of pathways by using the moonlight to guide him. As he made his way through the forest, he would need to fight the hordes of monsters. During his journey through the forest, Dante would also begin to catch up with the Avenger who he must track down and confront. After confronting him and escaping from the Dark Forest, Dante found himself close to his home city of Florence.

Completing this downloadable level would reward the player with the Dark Forest achievement/trophy. The player could also obtain the Clear Path Not Lost achievement/trophy if they managed to make it through the entire forest without taking any wrong turns. The two new enemies that are revealed in the DLC are the Forest Siren and the Death Knight. In addition, the "Disco Inferno" costume was added to the player's available costumes.

Trivia[]

  • The first Canto of "Inferno" began with Dante Alighieri claiming to be lost within a dark forest. The very first line of the poem was "At the midpoint of the journey of life, I found myself in a dark forest for the clear path was lost." This was also the first line that Dante said in the game.
  • In "Inferno", Dante made his way through a metaphorical dark forest where he encountered a leopard, a lion and a she-wolf. His video game counterpart encountered the same beasts in statue form.
  • Strangely enough, Dante still had his cross and magic abilities despite it taking place before he got them. This may simply be a developer error since this DLC was released after the game's original release. It was unknown if this sequence in entirety was canon, the game was retconned or if these are inserted for gameplay purposes only.
    • Contrary to common misconception, the events of "Dark Forest" took place after the events at Acre and before Dante returned to find Beatrice dead. This would mean that he would have his Scythe, but not his cross or magic.
