Antaeus is one of the Ice Giants of Treachery.
For his sins, he was condemned to the ninth circle of hell. There he is imprisoned in the ice alongside the other giants of old, who try to hinder Dante on his journey. His frozen breath keeps the souls of the damned imprisoned with him.
Antaeus was a figure in Greek mythology who was one of the Gigantes, the son of Pontus and Gaia. He was extremely strong as long as he remained in contact with the ground (his mother earth), but once lifted into the air he became as weak as other men. He would challenge all passers-by to wrestling matches, but once Antaeus accepts a challenge he fights to the death, and collect the loser's skulls, so that he might one day build out of them a temple to his father Pontus. Hercules, finding that he could not beat Antaeus by throwing him to the ground, as he would regain his strength and be fortified, discovered the secret of his power (touching the ground) and held Antaeus aloft and crushed him in a bearhug.
